The old saying “if you think you can, or can’t, you’re probably right”. This quote is the essence of every person achieving their personal goal. Every morning everyone regardless of shape, size, gender and physical ability has the choice of choosing their attitude, which influences how we act and feel. What is the true meaning of the word “attitude”; [a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person’s behavior.]
So, you maybe asking yourself why is this blog talking about “attitude” and what does it have to do with Riddle Defense – self defense / physical fitness. Well, as a coach & personal trainer I can tell you firsthand that it is the number one step in taking action in empowering yourself in order to reach your goal, whether it be in self defense, weight loss, good health, work, school and relationships.
There is a difference in results of the student who comes in as an optimist, which equals positive expectancy that helps them achieve their goals, and, the pessimist, which often becomes the victim of a self-fulfilling prophecy. The optimistic attitude will outperform those with a negative, pessimistic one. While a positive attitude doesn’t always work in helping you reach your goals, a negative attitude most always does.
With that being said; being optimistic in your training relates to mindful training. We train our bodies for the physical but it is equally important to train our minds. We all have the ability to take a negative situation and turn it to a positive. This doesn’t mean not living in reality; it means empowering your mental state in order to perform your best.
The three P’s of changing pessimism into optimism are:
Permanence: Set backs / disappointments are temporary.
Pervasiveness: Put problems in a box and not let them distract from your goal.
Personalization: Internalize victories and externalize defeats.

Here is a little exercise that I do every morning to train myself in having an Optimistic Attitude… Positive Mindfulness! Practice right when you wake up… first thing in the morning helps set the ‘tone’ of your day, increasing the likelihood of other “mindful” moments… don’t read the news on the internet, turn on the TV, check your phone, email, Facebook / Twitter / Instagram until after you’ve had your first thoughts of positive mindfulness… setting daily goals with an Optimistic Attitude!
Life brings a small percentage of negativity. It is our choice on how we react to it. Reinforce by Choosing a Positive Attitude!
Sincerely,
Leigh
